Our Philosophy and Story

Where Kids Learn to Flow with the Water, Not Fight It

At In The Deep, we believe swimming is more than a skill—it’s a gateway to joy, confidence, and a lifelong love of the water.

Founded by former competitive swimmer Sasha Hanic, our philosophy was born from a simple truth: the water gave Sasha belonging when she felt like an outsider, confidence when she needed it most, and a place to believe in herself. Now, for over 25 years, we’ve been passing that gift forward.

We teach differently. Starting with floating (not fighting), patience (not rushing), and trust (not fear). No flotation devices. No shortcuts. Just expert teachers guiding small classes of 2 kids at a time through a journey that’s creative, calm, and completely their own.

Because when kids discover the water will hold them—when they stop fighting to stay up and start flowing forward—that’s where real confidence blooms. And that confidence doesn’t just live in the pool. It follows them everywhere.

Meet Our Founder,

Sasha Hanic

At four years old, Sasha arrived in Australia unable to speak English. At school, she was the outsider—the kid who felt different, unseen, left out.

But in the water? Everything changed.

Swimming gave her what she couldn’t find anywhere else: confidence, achievement, belonging. It became her escape, her strength, the place where she could believe in herself. By age five, she was competing at Sydney’s Wales Swim Club. By her teens, she was winning State titles and swimming at a national level.

Then life took her in a different direction—music, university, exploration. She didn’t return to the pool for nearly a decade.

In her twenties, a friend offered her casual teaching work at a swim school in Bondi. Sasha said yes, expecting it to be temporary. Instead, she discovered her calling. Teaching kids to swim wasn’t just a job—it was a way to give them what swimming had given her: confidence, joy, and a lifelong relationship with the water.

For 25 years, Sasha has been refining a method that does something different: it teaches kids to flow with the water, not fight it. To trust themselves, not just flotation devices. To discover ease before speed, confidence before strokes.

Under her leadership, In The Deep has become an industry leader—presenting at Swim Australia conferences, supporting other swim schools, and creating a community where every child is seen, supported, and celebrated.

Today, Sasha’s goal remains beautifully simple: help every child become a graceful, relaxed swimmer who feels completely at home in the water. Because she knows firsthand—swimming doesn’t just teach you how to move through water. It teaches you how to move through life.

Our Pool and Learning Spaces

We believe where you swim matters. That’s why our pool is 100% free from harsh chlorine by-products—no stinging eyes, no chemical smell, no irritated skin. Just pure, gentle water where your child can breathe easy, splash freely, and learn confidently.

Our facilities are designed to feel as welcoming and supportive as our teaching approach. Warm water that invites you in. Soft lighting that soothes. Parent-friendly spaces where you can relax and watch the magic unfold. We’ve created an environment where little swimmers feel at ease from the moment they arrive—ready to learn, laugh, and fall in love with the water.
